What is psychic ability?

We are all born with our energy. Movement is not possible without it. Many people who are unfamiliar with energy and how it works within the body, associate psychic ability or our secondary sense with the mind and our thoughts. This can give people the wrong impression of our energy and its use because it is easy for sceptics to assume that people just 'imagine' that they have this ability and can use it as a way of sensing things.

Psychic ability is really just another way of describing how we can enable or use our energy field. Every living thing has an electromagnetic field because they have electric currents running through them. This is not new information. Mankind has been using this field to help heal for thousands of years. Think about the electricity in your home and how it needs to get to different rooms via wiring and energy points. This is the same for your body. Your energy flows like streams around your body and of course it is needed to make your body move and make your brain function. It does this through what is called Meridian points. They are like energy centres or wells in different areas of your body that allow your energy and body to work together effectively.

Historic evidence of the use of Meridians.

People the world over such as the Chinese have been using these points for over 3000 years with different forms of acupuncture and acupressure. In 1991 the oldest naturally mummified body of a man was discovered in the ice of the Italian Alps. Nicknamed Otzi for the Otztal (Otz valley) where he was discovered, the ice man is said to have lived about 5300 years ago.

Among his interesting features, were 57 tattoos, which were a series of vertical lines along the lumbar spine and behind the knee as well as around both of his ankles. The fact that these tattoos were hidden by clothing suggests that they were not for display purposes but more likely for medical purposes.

The interesting thing about this is that most of these tattoos were located along the energy meridian lines. Radiological examinations of his bones showed that he had "age-conditioned or strain-induced degeneration" in the bones located in the same areas of the tattoos, suggesting that the acupuncture points may have been used for pain relief treatments.

This shows that man has been aware of the energy points and has been using them effectively to treat each other for thousands of years longer than previously thought.

Secondary senses

Our energy meridians allow our energy to flow around our body but how does it work with our bodies to help us in other ways such as using our sixth sense? Let's explore that.

Firstly we need to understand what the secondary senses (or sixth sense) are. Many people instantly associate the sixth sense with ESP but it does so much more for us than that. All creatures use their secondary senses in ways that are particularly useful for them.

We know of our five primary senses: touch, sight, smell, taste, hearing. We use these to survive and we use them to detect stimuli in our environment. They are part of how we've learned so much about our world. But different species have other senses too that are developed to help them survive. The receptors for these tend to be within the body rather than on the surface.

Through science and the study of other species, we have learned of a whole range of other senses than the 5 we are commonly familiar with. Some of these are:

  • Infrared - Used by rattlesnakes and other pit vipers to hunt their prey in pitch blackness by following their body heat.
  • Nociception - sensing pain. This is done by nociceptors or pain receptors that can detect mechanical, thermal or chemical changes. This sends a message to the brain of damage, triggering a variety of responses such as to move away from the danger.
  • Barometric - sensing atmospheric pressure. Science says that animals can predict changes in the weather due to alterations in barometric pressure. Many pet owners also say their pets alert them to such changes as storms and earthquakes.
  • Vomeronasal - sensing pheromones. Most vertebrates possess two sensory channels. One is the olfactory system that we are familiar with and the second is the vomeronasal system which senses pheromones (chemical messengers) that carry information between individuals of the same species. Many animals use it to let others of their species know when to start and stop courtship or when danger is about.
  • Magnetic - Many animals such as bees, sharks, sea turtles, homing pigeons, migratory birds, tuna and salmon have magnetic sense which allows them to navigate and identify directions. They use this in much the same way as we use a compass.
  • Electrical - Some fish use electric fields to navigate through murky waters or to monitor their surroundings. Some frogs have a row of sensory pores in their skin that allow them to detect electrical currents in water.
  • Proximal - The proximal sense responds to stimuli that we have contact with or are near to. Our sense of touch is one of these senses but so is the ability to feel the presence of things nearby that we have not perceived with our five basic senses.

Receptors

In order to use these sixth senses, the animals need corresponding parts called receptors in their bodies to pick up on the signal being received. Humans also have parts in our bodies to help with our sixth senses. Our body has a range of receptors that could be important in using those extra senses.

Bones

One theory is that bone is made up of a crystalline material that can be used as a receiver and transmitter and therefore is sensitive to information being given to it through our senses. When some people say they feel things in their bones, they just may.

Adrenal glands

Our adrenal glands contain magnetite which is thought to be superb at recognizing electromagnetic sensory information. This can help us to become aware of situations around us and changes in energy before our five senses are able to alert us.

Pineal Gland

This gland is also called the Third Eye. It is capable of registering light and dark. It also contains magnetite and may provide electromagnetic information to the brain, allowing us to 'envision' something similar to how sonar does for whales.

Whether these really do help could perhaps be up to debate, but it makes sense that the human body would need to have some receptors just as the animals around us do.

One thing is certain, our body as a whole is a great receptor. As you know, our bodies are 98% water. You may also know that water carries an electrical current. It allows the impulses in our brain to connect correctly thereby getting all required information around efficiently. It works in our body the same way allowing our energy to flow properly to where it needs to. As it has been proven that interruption to our flow of energy through our meridians can cause physical, mental or emotional problems and vice versa, it is important to note that proper hydration of your body can help you be in tune with all of your senses because it helps the messages to travel to your brain and body, allowing you to act accordingly. So keep drinking that water.

Electromagnetic fields are produced by all the cells of any living body. When our electromagnetic field mixes or overlaps with the electromagnetic field of another living thing that we come into contact with, our body becomes a tool that can receive information from that field.

Scientific Research

We cannot see our energy meridians, but scientific research has helped to prove their existence. Orthopaedic surgeon and researcher, Robert O. Becker, discovered through his research that electric currents could help the growth and fusion of broken bones. He also performed scientific studies showing that the acupuncture points on the body have a dramatically reduced electrical resistance compared to other points on the skin, verifying that they do exist.

Acupuncture points.

Acupuncture points

In 1985, Pierre de Vernejoul, a French researcher into meridians, injected a radioactive marker into human acupuncture meridians. He tracked the movement of them through the body with a gamma imaging camera and discovered that they travelled along the meridians for up to 30 centimetres in around 4-6 minutes. When he injected these markers at random points on the body into blood vessels (excluding acupuncture points) and found that they did not act in the same way, he was able to deduce that the meridians are a separate series of paths inside the body.

In his book "Virtual Medicine", Dr Keith Scott-Mumby MD, MB ChB, PhD , suggests that the energy is conducted via a " *continuum of liquid crystalline water-bound collagen fibres running throughout the whole body. Recent studies have shown that these are not just mechanical fibres but that they have dielectric and conductive properties which make them sensitive to pressure, pH, local ionic composition and surrounding electromagnetic fields. In fact these collagen fibres, like a network mesh of fine electrical fibrils, form the ideal conductor medium in which many of the electro-magnetic phenomena described (in this book) may take place. Even just disturbing and stressing these fibres gives off an electrical potential."

I'm sure that in time more will be known about the subject, but centuries of use has proven to many practitioners the existence of and effectiveness of our energy in helping treat the person as a whole.

How do our secondary senses help us?

Just as animals are able to sense changes in the world and the weather, we too can sometimes sense changes around us through our secondary senses.

For some people these senses can become enhanced when they lose a primary sense. For example, some people who lose their sight, find that they may develop enhanced hearing, but also in some cases, some people develop the ability to 'see' images in their mind of the people and things around them. It won't be as accurate as seeing directly with the eyes, but it helps nonetheless.

There are many recorded situations throughout history associated with tragedies such as plane crashes where many of the seats were not filled on the flights. Some ticket holders would say that they felt the need to stay away even though they had nothing concrete to tell them why.

Some people when driving avoid certain roads only to discover later that they missed a crash that may have cost them their life.

Some people get 'feelings' about people they just met that turn out to be true later, alerting them to a potential friend or enemy.

Dowsers use their energy and secondary senses to find lost items, water and people.

I'm sure you can think of many situations in your life where your secondary senses kicked in to help you. It is a natural and necessary part of our body. It helps all components of us to work together - energy, body, mind and spirit.

So, to sum up, psychic ability is the ability of your body's electromagnetic field to send and receive information to other electromagnetic fields around you. The mind helps to decipher what some of the information means. It is not mysterious or mystical however people can be forgiven for thinking it is, given the complex nature of the whole energy network of our body and the fact that we cannot see it with our primary vision. Most people are not aware of their energy, simply because it is a part of them and they have always had it around. Even psychics only use a small portion of their true psychic ability. It is easier for us to notice this ability when unusual things happen around us such as predicting something unexpectedly. With time and practice most people can learn to do more with their energy.

Sceptics who don't believe in psychic ability still use it in a natural way through their judgement and gut instinct. They do it unknowingly and can be very accurate. This is because they automatically work with their energy in ways that are comfortable for them and within their belief system.

Although everybody is psychic, not everybody can feel or access their energy. It is possible to have blockages to it so that you cannot sense the energy that you may normally have around you. Some people may notice a difference when this happens without actually understanding what they are feeling. They will regain their equilibrium when the energy is once again flowing.

Such things as emotional upset, stress, sickness, drugs and alcohol can be responsible for temporarily blocking the ability to feel your energy or throwing it out of alignment. Drinking plenty of water and staying healthy physically and mentally can make a big difference in being able to connect with your secondary senses.
