If you're needing buttermilk for a recipe and don't have spare cash or time to run to the shop or even if you want to find a cheap alternative, here are a few you can try.

Traditional Buttermilk:
Traditionally buttermilk is made by putting milk or cream in a container and shaking for quite a while until butter is formed. The leftover liquid is the buttermilk. This is a fabulous thing for children to do so that they can learn how butter is made. Just put the milk in a well sealed jar and let them go crazy shaking it. If you choose to try this method, and want to use the butter you've made, then knead it under a cold tap to remove the excess milk so it does not go off as quickly.

Buttermilk substitute:
As an alternative to buying buttermilk, you can: Put one tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice into a cup measure.
Fill with milk to make one full cup
Let it sit for five minutes

OR

Add one tablespoon of cream of tartar to one cup of whole milk.
