Why You Should Avoid Séances and Ouija Boards
by Ronnee Ruselle

ouija board

Usually people use ouija boards (pronounce 'weejee' boards) and similar tools as a form of entertainment, not understanding exactly what is involved. Séances are held in an attempt to communicate with someone who has died and often a ouija board or similar process can be a part of the procedure involved when a person does not have a true ability for working with spirit.

Most of us have psychic abilities to some degree or other. It's probably safe to say that we all do, but a lot of us aren't aware of it and will deny the presence of those abilities. That's a person's prerogative, but it may be helpful to understand that denial of those abilities does not mean the removal of their existence. What I mean is that just because you deny it or don't see it, doesn't mean they're not there.

This is important to be aware of because understanding how these abilities work - even when unaware - in relation to such tools as ouija boards can help you to avoid some unfortunate and dangerous experiences.

How they work

It does not take years of experience to know how to use a ouija board and it doesn't require the understanding of psychic ability to be able to use one and this is perhaps the attraction of them.

Because we are part energy and part physical, a large part of what we do is affected by the energy side of us. Our energy travels in waves just the same way as radio waves do. I know this because I have seen it. It's also how the guides describe it.

Our brain and our thoughts make our energy work so basically whatever you tell it to do, it will do - even unintentionally. When you think of loved ones who have crossed over, the thoughts travel on waves and eventually reach them. This is why they will sometimes let you know they are around or you will sometimes feel them around you when you think of them. Likewise, you will think of them when they are around because their energy is recognized by your brain, bringing it to your conscious attention. To be safe, avoid calling them. They will come to you when they can, but if you call them, other spirits will pick up on that and may find their way to you.

The same happens when you use a ouija board or holding a séance. You are reaching out there with your energy and calling someone to you who has passed away. The biggest problem with using ouija boards is that you won't necessarily be calling someone who has crossed over and it won't necessarily be someone who you even know. Of course, this can happen regardless of whether you have a ouija board with you or not, but it's more likely to draw several unknown spirits to you when you use such a tool because your concentration on it is so much stronger. If you have other people around you, then you have a table of people whose energy is calling out for any spirit within reach to come to them. Spirits generally maintain their personalities and behaviours after they've passed away so if you are unlucky enough to have an unbalanced or angry spirit called to you, then you can expect at the very least to suffer some sort of discomfort as a result of calling them.

Unexpected and unwelcome results

Spirits who have not crossed over are often troubled. They are responsible for many of the horror stories you've heard in relation to hauntings. The demon-type characters that you see on movies are really just people who present themselves in the scariest way possible in order to get a reaction out of you. But perhaps the most disturbing thing to consider is that whatever harm a person can do in life, they can also do in death.

Those who have crossed over tend to have been healed, reunited with family etc and have found balance. It is those who have not crossed over that you will most likely attract to you using a ouija board. These spirits get bored very easily and look for mischief to get up to. The ouija board itself is simply a vessel through which they can communicate with you, but they can and most likely will then decide to attach themselves to you if you present them with a suitably excited reaction. They will then feed you any number of stories and tales to keep you interested thereby easing their boredom. Some of course, are just nasty and out for revenge and these ones can bring injury and danger.

As for séances, anybody who communicates with spirit will tell you that it is not a perfect science and it can have its difficulties. Many professionals will work alone when trying to contact those who have crossed over and understand the specifics involved in doing so.

It is possible to attract a nice spirit, but they too will take a toll on you - all spirits do, so don't think you're doing yourself a favour or have found a lifelong friend in a spirit. They are very draining and should be helped to return home. Nobody would like to be stuck on this plane disconnected from their loved ones unless they have a purpose in doing so.

I have heard first-hand accounts of experiences with ouija boards. A girl I did a reading for a few years back told me of a scary experience that her friends had when she attended a party where they decided it would be fun to have a séance with a ouija board. To maintain her privacy, I'll call her Pamela. She said that they called 'Jesus' to come forth thinking that they would get the person mentioned in the bible. Of course being fairly young in their early 20's they did not realize that it's actually a very common name just like "John" is in Western Society so the character they got was far from the person they had hoped for.

A cold feeling was reported in the room as well as an 'eerie' feeling along with one of menace. Not wanting to be a part of it, Pamela sat back and did not enter into any of the questions etc, but she was alarmed because she had been present at this party and strange occurrences had begun to happen to her friends.

Over a course of 2 months, the following had been experienced by her friends: One fatal car crash for which there was no apparent explanation. One boy broke his leg. There were relationship break ups, jobs lost, homes lost, another fell very ill and in all cases there were vicious arguments, irritations, unexplained events such as items apparently being thrown across rooms, accidents and a whole range of dreadful events. It was obvious that it happened to those who had been around the ouija board that night and that others who were present were completely unaffected and their life continued as normal. It's understandable that Pamela would be concerned, but fortunately she was not one of those affected. After 2 months, all such events suddenly ceased to happen.

General rule of using ouija boards - don't!

This is just one of many similar situations I've heard of over the years. The problem is that the person using the board usually does not have enough experience with spirit work to know what they are doing. They do not know what to look for, how to deal with the spirit and in most cases can't even communicate with spirits enough to warrant going near them which is why they use the board to communicate.

The guides tell me that we come into this lifetime with the abilities that we need to learn our lessons and also to use for whatever purpose we're meant to. If you have the abilities of a medium and it is meant to be used in this capacity, then you should be able to use your ability naturally to do such things without tools. This is the only way you can reach out with your energy and 'sense' what's happening around the actual connection itself so you can tell whether this person is the correct person or not, but communication through a device such as a ouija board does not give you the same control because the board is being used as the conduit for communication rather than yourself.

When I asked the guides why séances are considered unsafe they told me that this is generally because more than one person is involved, usually with little or no experience who are not trained as a medium or fully informed and that every thought, feeling and ability of anyone who is around can influence what happens.

The general rule should be that if you can communicate adequately with spirits, then you don't need the board. I know of no professional who would ever consider using one due to the dangers involved. That alone should be enough to make you think twice. If a seasoned professional won't touch it, then don't you. If you find a professional that needs a ouija board or similar tool to communicate with spirit, then it means that their talent does not run strongly in that area and they should not be working in it so find somebody else. Another thing is that if you don't have the ability and experience with spirit to be able to communicate with them without a board, then you should not be going near one.

The truth is that there is no need for such items and they should be removed from sale. If you truly need to communicate with someone who has passed away, then you can find a professional who can do so with safety and a true understanding of the situation involved.

Should party entertainment be sought, then it would be a good idea to find something else because you won't be doing your guests any favours by attracting danger to them. An alternative could be to hire a psychic to do mini readings for your guests. If you are a guest at a party where a ouija board is being used, you may wish to consider leaving before they start.

A final word from the guides: "You have no way of being able to control the thoughts and feelings of another person. Remember that when you are calling for someone in spirit, everyone else in the room is calling for them as well in their minds and reaching out to them with their abilities and with their feelings. A range of emotions and thoughts are released. It is important to be specific with your questions because the smallest difference can bring about a very different result. Consider then, the result of many people asking the wrong questions and you are inviting many spirits who are not meant to be in that place. They are unhappy at being interfered with for the sake of entertainment and some will use the opportunity to attach to someone whom they can use for their own entertainment - not a pleasant outcome."
