Mastery
Mastery of one's domain is to be its leader -
the source of power that makes decisions
and others look up to for direction and advice.
Mastery of a subject is to have studied widely and deeply -
to be able to hold a conversation
and teach others of the subject.
Mastery of a skill is to have practiced so often
that the ability comes effortlessly -
without the need for conscious thought.
Mastery of the self is most elusive of all -
requiring patience, understanding, commitment and bravery -
not of any domain, knowledge or skill,
but of the mysteries within.
No-one else can judge mastery of the self,
except the individual in question.
No-one else can ask the hard questions
and give honest answers.
No-one else can look in the mirror
and see what is really there - inside.
Mastery of the self requires first meeting the self,
then listening.
Mastery of the self requires action
to bring the inner self to the surface where it can greet others.
And the Master of the Self does not shy away
when someone questions it,
It does not back down when challenged,
It does not conform to others' expectations,
It does not require approval from anyone.
For only the Master - the true Master of the Self
can stand against all influences and be true to itself.
This is the ultimate mastery and is set as a challenge for all
who seek happiness, harmony and a lifetime of fulfilment.
