Mycoplasmas - Stealthy Health Saboteurs
by Andrew Ruselle

There are many illnesses and diseases today which may be attributable to mycoplasmas. Recognizing and treating these shapeshifting attackers could give hope to many of returning to a normal lifestyle with reduced pain and irritation.
Growing research into mycoplasmas show them to be a common link among chronic and autoimmune disorders. Mycoplasmas are the smallest free-living micro-organisms on the planet. They are so small that they are undetectable by most tests. Bacteria is usually cultured easily, but Mycoplasmas can be very hard to culture in the laboratory and are therefore often missed as pathogenic causes of disease.
Other bacteria has a solid cell-wall structure whereas mycoplasmas have no solid cell wall and are more like jellyfish with a pliable sticky membrane. This allows them to change their shape and stick to other cells. They form a parasitic relationship by using the nutrition from the other cell to grow and blend it's appearance with the other cell aiding in it's ability to camouflage itself. There are over 100 documented species of mycoplasmas recorded as being responsible for causing various diseases in humans, animals and plants.
Mycoplasmas allow invasion by other diseases
Because they drain your cells of nutrition, this leaves your once healthy cells weakened and open to damage, invasion by other micro-organisms and even mutation. So what was once a healthy cell capable of fighting off normal infections and diseases, now becomes subject to the illnesses and weakness of not only the mycoplasmas but any other bacteria, virus or fungi to come along, compounding effects and illness. It also means that the symptoms vary from person to person because they are building upon the original symptoms, making it very difficult to diagnose any specific autoimmune or chronic disease.
The gut has a natural flora that controls the expansion of pathogens, but when mycoplasmas are outside the gut, such as in blood vessels and joints, they can grow uninhibited giving them the freedom to colonize organs and eventually destroy systems. It's believed that growth probably occurs when the immune system is weak, such as during times of illness or stress or when you're poorly nourished and given our modern day lifestyle, these can be commonplace.
Mycoplasma pneumonia as well as at least 7 other mycoplasma species have now been linked as a direct cause or significant co-factor to a range of chronic diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, diabetes, Crohn's Disease, ALS, non-gonoccal urethritis, asthma, lupus, infertility, AIDS, certain cancers, leukemia and many more.
The concern about high cholesterol and mycoplasmas
Many of the fatty deposits that people have in their arteries called plaques are stable and pose little danger. If they suddenly rupture, however, they can scatter debris that can block arteries entirely, causing a stroke or heart attack. Because mycoplasmas are the only microorganisms known to require cholesterol as an essential nutrient, there is a concern for people who have high cholesterol levels who also suffer from mycoplasmal infections because the arterial plaques could become a haven for Mycoplasma cells causing a rupture.
How to tell if you may have Mycoplasma related illnesses
Unfortunately there is no guarantee of detection and even if blood tests show the presence of mycoplasma cells, your doctor may not take action if your disorder doesn't fit a predetermined list of symptoms usually associated with a particular strain of mycoplasma.
Many people suffering from mycoplasma-associated diseases have several of the following symptoms, which may be present all the time or may come and go:
- muscle spasms or burning muscles
- chronic fatigue
- depression
- joint pain or reduced mobility, including rheumatoid arthritis
- headaches, vision problems, or light sensitivity
- cognitive problems such as thinking, learning words, reasoning, remembering, or imagining
- dizziness or problems with balance
- stuttering or speech difficulties
- breathing problems, cardiac problems, or chest pain or pressure
- flatulence, bloating, or diarrhoea
- lack of bladder control or frequent urination
- stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting
- sinus pain or nasal congestion
- impotence or loss of libido
- menstrual or genital pain
- sore throat
- tinnitus (buzzing, ringing, or whistling in the ears) or hearing loss
- skin rashes, frequent sores or infections
- yeast infections
- coughing heavily or frequent thick saliva clearing
- allergies, sensitivities to chemicals
- dry or itchy eyes
- night sweats
Mycoplasma can cause increased sensitivity to P4, the neurotransmitter that is responsible for sending pain messages to the brain so many of the symptoms associated with mycoplasma related illnesses are quite painful. In the past 20 years the annual number of reports of disease associated with mycoplasmas have increased.
Because it works at the cellular level, it can affect almost any part of the body. Clinical and epidemiological data indicate that symptoms from the skin, mucous membranes, the central nervous system, the heart and from other organs as well are not uncommon. It has been found regularly in the bone marrow of children with leukaemia. It has been discovered in patients suffering from inflammatory pelvic disease, urethritis, and other urinary tract diseases. It has been discovered in the heart tissues and fluid of patients suffering from carditis, pericarditis, tachycardia, hemolytic anaemia, and other coronary heart diseases. It has been found in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with meningitis and encephalitis, seizures, ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), Alzheimer's and other infections, diseases and disorders of the central nervous system. The disease suffered is directly related to where the mycoplasma is located in the body and which cells in the body it attaches to or attacks.
How to overcome mycoplasmas
In order to overcome symptoms from Mycoplasma causing illnesses, you need to address nutrition and vitamin deficiencies within your body so it's wise to work on improving your immune system and having vitamin supplements plus a natural organic diet rich in nutritional value.
It has been found that high dosages of the following supplements will with nutritional replacement and aid recovery:
- Vitamins B, C, and E
- Minerals - especially zinc, magnesium, chromium, and selenium
- Amino acids, especially L-cysteine, L-tyrosine, L- carnitine, and malic acid
- Coenzyme Q10
- Bioflavonoids and biotin
- Beta-carotene
- Folic acid
- Flaxseed oil
- Intestinal flora replacer including one containing fructoologosaccharides (FOS).
- Lactoferrin
- Olive leaf extract
- Colloidal silver
Because they absorb more completely and quickly, it's better to take it in a form that absorbs directly into the bloodstream such as a tablet that is absorbed under the tongue or oral sprays rather than pills. Although antibiotics will generally be recommended by a GP, this usually requires multiple cycles of different synthetic antibiotics for a year or more. Unfortunately mycoplasmas will become more resistant to the treatment the longer they are exposed to them and of course they weaken the immune system creating a haven for more mycoplasmas to invade and slowing recovery resulting in a greater hazard for the patient. Natural solutions work more effectively because they can kill a larger range of microbes at once than synthetic antibiotics aiding in a faster recovery time. They also have fewer side effects and can strengthen the immune system.
Feeling worse before feeling better
We recommend a visit to a qualified natural practitioner before starting a treatment. As with treating any illness, your body will be likely to suffer from side effects due to the body eliminating toxins and die-off of the pathogen cells or what's called the Herxheimer reaction. This is a short-term detoxification reaction in the body. As the body detoxifies, it is not uncommon to experience flu-like symptoms such as headache, muscle and joint pain, body aches, sore throat, general feeling of unwell, sweating, chills, nausea or other symptoms.
This is a normal - and even healthy - reaction that indicates that parasites, fungi, viruses, bacteria or other pathogens are being effectively killed off. Usually at such times, people think that the treatment is causing the reaction and stop taking the supplements. You may feel better momentarily, but this is because you're allowing the mycoplasma colonies to become strong and return to their former invasion.
Should the symptoms become too much for you, it's better to lessen the treatment you are on drink as much pure water as you can and taking colloidal silver has been known to help with such side effects as it reduces toxicity by 20 times as well as eliminating the pathogens.
An Ounce of Prevention
A balanced, nutritious diet, a strong immune system, drinking plenty of water and a lifestyle that is 'health-friendly' will help you to avoid the above problems and ensure a higher quality of life.
Here's to good health!
