Energising the Energetic Being
by Donna Thomson

energised woman

Have you noticed how often you feel drained and lacking in energy? Sometimes I feel we get too used to feeling tired and stressed - we almost come to expect it due to our hectic lifestyles. Whether it's due to work, family, time constraints, study, emotional or other stresses, there are things you can do to bring the buzz of energy back into your life.

Being 'energised' is more complex than you may at first think. It is not just about physical energy. It is not just about reducing mental or emotional stress. It is a whole picture of the being you are - on all levels.

The Whole You

It is now more commonly understood that we are beings composed of energy. We have physical bodies that we can see because they are made of denser energy. We also have mental, emotional and spiritual bodies, which we cannot see, but they are part of us, none-the-less. For instance, we cannot see our emotions, but we know they exist. We think, but we cannot see our thoughts. So it isn't far-fetched to realise that we are much more than our physical bodies.

Our spiritual bodies are what link us to higher levels of consciousness, from our own higher-self to our connection with 'all that is' - the 'greater consciousness' that we are all a part of. Nourishing and energising our spiritual bodies is just as important because this is where we get our sense of purpose and connection to the universe - without which, life would seem quite mundane and disconnected.

Reasons & Remedies

Below are some reasons why we may become depleted of energy, along with a few ideas for energising your 'whole self'. It's not a comprehensive list, but will get you thinking about how your energy works and how it is affected by inner and outer influences. Using the energising ideas as a regular 'maintenance program' will help you bounce back from draining situations more quickly.

You'll also find that although I've broken the areas of energy into different headings, most of the tips will work on several energy levels at once. After all, we are integrated beings and our energy levels work together as one - what I refer to as the 'whole self'.

Physical Energy

Eat healthy. How and what we eat greatly influences the ability of our body to function at optimum levels. Eating sugary foods plays havoc with our blood sugar levels, giving us sharp peaks of energy followed by a large drop. To better regulate our blood sugar levels, we need to eat low GI foods. So carbohydrates such as wholegrains, legumes, nuts, fruits and vegetables should be a priority in our daily intake, along with protein for body maintenance.

Hydrate your body. A common cause of feeling physically drained is dehydration. Do you drink enough water each day? We all know it is good for us, but most of us don't manage to get those 8-10 glasses a day. Carrying a water bottle with you (e.g. when out shopping or on your desk at work) allows you easy access to water throughout the day and we often drink more by sipping regularly than going to the kitchen for a glass of water every few hours. The next tip puts a spin on the usual drinking bottle idea and helps vitalize the 'whole self' rather than just the physical body.

Power Booster Tip! Carry a water bottle with you that contains a clear quartz crystal, or likewise, place the crystal in a glass or jug of water. A quartz point is great, but a tumbled stone is fine too. Drinking quartz-infused water will give you a boost on more than one level - physically via the water and energetically via the quartz which is a natural energy magnifier. For a super-boost, place your drink bottle/cup/jug (with quartz crystal) in the sun for at least an hour (you can refrigerate it afterwards). The sun's powerful energy, along with the magnification powers of the quartz, will infuse your water with extremely beneficial water that will give you a boost in mind, body and soul.

Mental Energy

Quieten the mental chatter. Consider how much your mind has to process in a single day - from what to wear, what to cook for dinner, which way to drive to work, formulating ideas for business, comprehending new information, making a mental note of your mother's upcoming birthday and possible gift ideas, what to say to everyone you encounter that day - the list goes on. Your mind constantly runs at 'full-steam ahead' mode, which really outputs only 80% quality thought (if that!). Plus, the tireder your mind gets, the less efficient it runs - you can't concentrate well, you try to read a book but keep repeating the same sentence without it sinking in, and so on. The key is to let your mind recover regularly via meditation and relaxation.

I've often found that a few moments in a peaceful state of mind suddenly brings some great creative thoughts, ideas and inspirations. So, by quietening the usual mental chatter, we are able to access to that 90-100% quality thought! Some of the greatest business men and women throughout history made time for regular meditation so they could access some of their greatest ideas.

Engage in stillness. If you suffer from insomnia, find it hard to get to sleep, or engage in heavy-duty mental activity such as work-related projects or study, meditation (relaxing the mind) will be vital in re-energising the mind. This doesn't have to mean sitting on a mountaintop or in a yoga pose. You don't even have to close your eyes. Perhaps you have a candle, crystal, or even a tree to contemplate, allowing your mind to focus in on the one thing while all the other random thoughts disperse. The 'Healing & Wellness' classification contains a number of articles on meditation you may find useful.

Breathe in life force. Focused breathing energises and centres not only the mind, but the 'whole self'. Step outside into the fresh air or stand near a window... take some deep, slow breaths... and imagine that you are breathing in the bright, golden, vitalising light of the sun. As already mentioned, the sun gives off great energy - its light energises the whole planet and everything in it. In fact, the light of the sun contains all seven of the spectrum (rainbow) colours, all of which we need for optimum health of the 'whole self'.

If you can imagine that when you are feeling depleted of energy, your 'colours' are dull and even grey or murky looking. Breathing in life force energy via the sun's rays will brighten and restore your colours - your energy. Also, mental energy is often seen in the aura as the colour yellow, so breathing in the yellow of the sun helps infuse your being with more yellow 'mental energy' when it's running low.

Another drinking tip! With my first glass of water for the day, I used to close my eyes and as I drank the water, I would imagine drinking in the light of the sun. I would feel my chest expand, my breathing deepen, and my whole being become light and energised. A great start to the day!

Emotional Energy

Remove emotional blockages. Emotional energy depletion often happens when we are out of sync with our true feelings and expression. By holding back our emotions and by not saying how we feel, we create blockages in our emotional body, which over time can manifest as physical dis-orders and dis-ease, especially in relation to the heart and throat. Vibrational therapies and tools such as crystals, colour therapy, aromatherapy and flower essences are particularly useful for energising and uplifting the subtle energies of the emotions.

Colour for restoration. For instance, the colour green (which is the colour of the heart chakra or energy centre) can boost self love and compassion for others. Green therapy can be utilised via the clothes you wear, colours around you in the home, or in the form of crystals such jade, aventurine or emerald. Pink works similarly as it's known as the 'love' colour. I recommend rose quartz, or for deeper emotional distress, rhodonite is a useful and supportive crystal.

Colour for energising. While the above works on unblocking and therefore restoring the emotional energy levels, colours can be generally uplifting in day-to-day life. Yellow and gold are vibrant, energising colours - associated with power and the power centre of the body, which is the solar plexus. Red is also a powerful colour, enhancing vitality and passion. If you need a pick-me-up for a night out on the town, put your red dress on...or red shirt for men! These colours also promote confidence and self-empowerment. Wearing a citrine pendant, or carrying a citrine crystal on you, is great for this purpose.

Empathy & Healers. Some people are more sensitive to the energy and emotions of others. If you find yourself feeling emotionally drained after being around someone who is in a negative mental or emotional state (they are closely linked), it's likely that you've picked up that negative energy. You could also inadvertently take on the emotions of others around you without realising those emotions don't belong to you. It's not surprising that this happens when you consider that our energy fields reach way out from our physical bodies and therefore mingle with the energetic bodies of the people around us.

People with healing abilities also become drained of energy because they (often subconsciously) send out their energy to others to try and heal them - usually emotionally, as others share their distress and problems with them. While it's a good thing to care and to want to heal, we can do so while also protecting our own energy from becoming too drained.

Protect yourself. Visualise a protective, non-impenetrable bubble of white light around you. Do this each morning and before bed each evening. This is your energetic protection that helps prevent you being depleted by outside influences and negative energy - whether from other people, your environment, or even the presence of spirits.

Ground yourself. Another way to restore and energise your body is to connect with nature - even 5 minutes sitting on the grass or standing in the sunlight. Grounding is important because we are spiritual beings in a physical world and we must maintain this balance. Being grounded allows you to function well and stay connected with your physical reality. You can also use crystals such as black tourmaline or smoky quartz for grounding. Another tip is to visualise yourself with roots shooting out from your feet and into the earth - a great visualisation for starting each day!

Spiritual Energy

As well as emotional energy protection, the technique mentioned above also protects you on a psychic and spiritual level - it's commonly referred to as 'psychic protection'. Doing this protection each day is important for safekeeping and maintaining your energetic self.

But what does it mean to energise your spiritual body?

All of the tips already mentioned in this article will aid in boosting your spiritual energy too - the quartz-infused drinking water, breathing or drinking in the light of the sun, vibrational therapies, meditation and psychic protection. Anything you do to raise your vibration energises your spiritual body and brings you closer to your spirituality.

Meditate for spiritual connection. Even though meditation has been mentioned in relation to quietening the active mind, it is also an extremely effective way to connect with higher frequencies - the spiritual planes. Through meditation, you can access your higher spiritual self, communicate with your guides, and contemplate concepts of a more spiritual nature, without the more physical and logical parts of your self interfering. The energy 'boost' lies in actually being able to connect with those spiritual levels of self and the universe. Something which we seldom make time for or even think we can do - but we all can.

Develop your psychic abilities. There are many psychic abilities, not just clairvoyance. Through recognising your psychic strengths and 'flexing your psychic muscles', you can develop your intuition and use it to help guide you along your life path. Why work with only five of your senses when you have six?

The biggest energy boost you can give your spiritual self is to acknowledge it and listen to it. It can then help you in all other areas of your life.

Energising is really about restoring balance so we can function in our natural vitalised state of being. A final tip is about sleep - a lack of sleep affects us on all levels and we can't cope as well with day-to-day life. So do your best to get the amount of sleep that is essential for you to carry out your days in an energised, competent manner. Even if you have to stop watching those late night television shows and go to bed earlier.

And so the completeness of 'you' is closely integrated - it's all about being aware of your 'whole self' and the maintenance or health of it. Here's to a more balanced and vital you!
