Creating a Set of Crystals for the Chakras
by Donna Thomson

Self-healing, energising, balancing and developing greater awareness, compassion and expression are just some of the reasons for using crystals with your chakras. The chakra system consists of seven main energy centres which align down the spine. Each has an associated colour and there are crystals/gemstones that effectively work to revitalise and remove blockages from the chakras in order for us to feel a greater sense of well-being and harmony. See Chakras - An Introduction for more information about chakras.
Crystal Colours and the Chakras
When I started my own crystal explorations I was sceptical about the association between crystals of particular colours and the seven main chakras. I've since come to understand how each colour resonates at a particular frequency just like crystals do. In fact the colours of crystals are extremely relevant to the colours of the chakras because of this. The lower chakra colours (red, orange and yellow) have lower frequencies and as you move up through the colours, which coincide with the colours of the rainbow, they resonate at faster speeds/frequencies.
In terms of the chakras, the denser physical chakras are the lowest and the higher spiritual chakras are at the top. In terms of the colours themselves, the red, orange and yellow are the most 'earthy' grounding colours while the green, blue, purple and violet/white are the lightest 'floaty' colours. However, the use of crystals with each chakra is not limited to the corresponding chakra colours. Other crystals of a deep earthy colour such as brown or black also benefit the lower chakras. While the heart chakra is traditionally known as green, pink is also commonly associated with the heart/love and so crystals that are pink (such as rose quartz) can be effectively used in that area. Many crystals that are white, clear, light blue, violet, purple and all those shades in between are beneficial for the upper chakras.
Creating your Chakra Crystal Set
Here are some suggestions for crystals which correspond with the chakras. Choose one crystal for each chakra to create your own personalised set which you can keep together in a special pouch.
Crown Chakra: Violet, white or clear crystals such as clear quartz, herkimer diamond, selenite, tibetan quartz or clear calcite.
Third Eye Chakra: Purple or indigo crystals such as amethyst, azurite, charoite, or sodalite.
Throat Chakra: Blue crystals such as lapis lazuli, blue quartz, blue lace agate, blue calcite or aquamarine.
Heart Chakra: Pink crystals such as rose quartz or rhodonite, or green crystals such as aventurine, emerald or jade. A lovely healing stone that combines both pink and green is ruby in zoisite.
Third Chakra: Yellow crystals such as citrine, yellow/gold calcite or fire/harlequin quartz.
Second Chakra: Orange crystals such as tiger's eye, carnelian or orange calcite.
Base Chakra: Red or dark crystals such as red jasper, garnet or carnelian.
Bonus: It's also useful to include an eighth stone particularly for grounding - hematite, smoky quartz or black tourmaline are great choices. Place the crystal just below your feet. Any of these crystals can also be used in the location of the base chakra.
What to do with your Chakra Crystal Set
Meditation or relaxation is probably the easiest and most effective way of using crystals to balance your chakras. Simply lay down and get comfortable. Place the crystals according to the location of each chakra (see the image above). For instance, place the crystal for the crown chakra (at the top) just above your head. The third eye crystal will sit centred between the eyebrows on your forehead. Then logically you will place the throat and heart chakra crystals in their respective areas, while the third chakra crystal will be placed on your solar plexus which is above your navel around the base of the rib cage. The second chakra crystal can sit just below or on the navel and the base chakra crystal on the pubic bone. If you are using the eighth grounding crystal, place it at the base of your feet.
Alternatively you can choose one chakra to focus on at a time, placing the appropriate crystal in the location of the corresponding chakra. Either way, allow yourself at least 10 minutes to completely relax or go into a meditative state. The crystals will naturally work with your energy to restore balance. However, you may wish to focus you attention on each chakra in turn...seeing and feeling the colour spinning and growing before moving up to the next chakra. Take note of any issues, feelings, emotions, thoughts or even memories that may crop up as these things may need to be dealt with in order to remove long-held blockages and restore harmony to that chakra.
These are only beginning suggestions and you may indeed find other ways to use your chakra crystal set. For further information on the qualities of each chakra, read 'Chakras - An Introduction'.
