Five ways to unwind after work
Sometimes our regular work can really wear us out. It is necessary but it does not have to rule the whole of our life. Allowing it to remain in us can have a negative effect in our personal lives and on our work performance.
It is a benefit to us as individuals to put an effort into removing that stress so that we can enjoy the rest of our day. Taking the time out to find some enjoyment and relaxation can go a long way to ensuring the stress does not affect the rest of our lives and rebalances us, helping us be a success at work and home.
Do not take your work home
If you do not need to take your work home, then don't. If you do need to, ensure it happens as little as possible. Your home is your haven and place of relaxation. It is to your advantage to keep it that way. Give yourself permission to leave the 'work-thoughts' at work. The moment you walk out that door, stop, breathe and tell yourself. It is now my own time. Switch off the work mode and enter personal life mode just as you do when you are going on holidays. This is not always easy so using some of the following techniques to assist will help you succeed and fill your life with fun too.
Enjoy humour
Take the opportunity to read or watch something funny on the way home or when you get there. This helps you no end and allows your body to let go of tension. You could even do this in breaks at work to help get through the day.
A well-earned pamper
It is amazing how rare it is for people to pamper themselves. It is an amazingly effective way of ridding yourself of the daily stresses. You could book yourself in for a massage, pedicure, manicure or facial. Alternatively, how about you have a nice warm bath with your favourite bubbles or oil, gently playing relaxing music or uplifting music (whichever you need), perhaps some candle light as the muted lighting helps muscles to relax and as a special treat, grab your favourite book or magazine, a glass of wine and one or two chocolates (not too many, only a couple as a bonus treat).
You could enjoy a nice loofah, making your skin shine and feel fresh and invigorated and as you bathe, tell yourself in your mind that you are washing away the tensions of the day and replacing them with positive, uplifting and comforting feelings.
Enjoyable interests
Finding an interest or a hobby can be a great way to help forget the stress of work. It also allows the creative part of your mind to run free. This part of you is connected strongly to your emotions and when you are indulging in something you enjoy doing, it gives your mind (and body depending upon the hobby) something else to focus on, truly letting go of work related worries and makes you happy. After all, you're doing what you want to do. This hobby can involve something simple like cooking or something a little crafty and hands on like scrapbooking, sculpture, pottery, painting or even playing music. The only limit is your imagination.
Fun with friends
Organising nights out or even nights in can be great ways to unwind. If you like to dance, you can let go of tension in your body. Alternatively having a fun night watching videos, a barbecue or just a get together for a relaxing drink before going out to dinner can be great opportunities to unwind. They also pick you up as you look forward to them, instantly making you feel more positive. Choose people whose company you enjoy. The type who make you feel good about yourself and/or make you laugh.
